Most of our farmers are experiencing challenges with mosquito bites in their birds, including broilers. These will affect our carcass quality in broilers, cause other diseases and add to reduction in egg production for the layers and road runners.
It’s vital for us to ensure we are controlling the mosquito itself through removing stagnant pools of water, weeds around the sheds and general good housekeeping.
Kindly note that using mosquito coils is not an option as it produces smoke in the shed. The best is using Cislin to spray the sheds and outside the premises. Spraying with Cislin can be done while the birds are in the shed, it is preferable to do it during the rest period after the flock.
For road runners and layers farmers are reminded of the importance of vaccination for Fowl Pox which is transmitted by biting insects including mosquitoes.
Helminths are also important pests to control, these include roundworms and tapeworms. The presence of these will result in poor body condition and reduced productivity. Regular treatment with Piperine every 8 weeks for road runners and layers is recommended. Hygiene is paramount particularly for birds being reared on the floor.
Biosecurity remains a critical part of disease control; procedures on the farm must always be assessed to ensure they’re working to prevent entry of disease and disease causing agents into the flocks.
